I love crappy music and I’m not ashamed to admit it. | Fetch My Flying Monkeys
Everyone needs a fleet of flying monkeys to rip the stuffing out of the annoying people in their lives
— Laura

I bought a bunch of music on iTunes because Steve Jobs hadn’t stolen all of my money and I felt like getting some old tunes that were on sale for 69 cents. I think Neil Diamond’s music back then was pure genius. Have you heard Soolaimon? You really should. And Karen Carpenter could sing like a motherfucker especially since you figure she was puking in between all the takes and that stomach acid was probably playing hell on her vocal cords. I also bought some Beatles tunes even though I always thought they were completely overrated. I know I’ll catch hell for that, but I don’t care, they were. But I do like Blackbird and Let it Be. Oh, and I also bought some Glee tunes. That show is so played out but there’s something about people dancing around singing in public that makes me smile even though when I do it I just get weird looks and threats of police being called and then after they arrive I get “The Talk” of “We just want to admit you for your own safety and ‘observation’.” Whatever. Haters gonna hate.

Damn them haters! Damn them to hell!
*** I KNOW! Right? So what if I want to bust into song and dance around. Fuckers. ~Laura

  2. Well, I think the Beatles were waaaay over-rated, so no hate from me. And I do love me some Neil Diamond, too. Karen…not so much…
*** Oh man, she could sing. Listen to Superstar, if you can listen to that without remembering someone, you’re dead inside. Period. ~Laura

  3. Jean says:

Man, I miss your insensible ramblings!
    *** Well thanks. I think. Ha! ~Laura

  4. Maeve says:

I love me some Neil Diamond! Have you ever seen him in concert? The man is AMAZING!
*** YES! I love him and his music! ~Laura

  5. Jena says:

Neil and Karen ROCK! Fact. I totally agree on the Beatles. I like some of their songs. I still listen to Waylon, Marty Robbins, Don Willams, etc. Gordon Lightfoot Rocks!
*** I totally agree too. Oh and I got that song “Just When I Needed You Most” by Randy VanWarmer and I don’t know how I even lived without that being in my audio library. ~Laura

  6. Jennifer says:

LOL! I love Neil Diamond too! And the Carpenters had awesome songs! I love your ramblings!!
*** Good music back then. God music. ~Laura

  7. CGHill says:

Many years ago, I turned over a Neil Diamond 45 and found something called “Broad Old Woman,” four and a half minutes of studio noodling that’s obviously getting nowhere close to a usable take, and at one point Diamond says “If you think I’m putting my name on this, you’re out of your mind.”
They eventually put it into one of his box sets. I still think it’s great.
*** I love all his songs..now I will have to look that one up. ~Laura

  8. D.W. says:

I’m a Neil Diamond fan, too. I can remember my mom playing his records over and over when I was growing up, and dancing in the living room to his music. The Carpenters were okay, although the only song I can remember was Afternoon Delight. I also thought the Beatles were completely overrated. I don’t mind listening to their early stuff on the radio, though.
As for you, don’t let anyone get you down. Dance when you feel it, and to hell with everyone else. :-)
*** YEAH! To hell with those damn cops! ! ~Laura

  9. Jeffro says:

Just cuz the Beatles were first didn’t make them the very best. And Karen had a hell of a voice.
Now all ya need is some Melanie Safka.
*** Dude! I so had “Brand New Key” years ago. It’s like my theme song which is funny because I don’t rollerskate. Ha! ~Laura

  10. Aithne says:

    Neil rules.
*** Yes he does indeed. ~Laura

  11. Jan says:

Old Diamond is great stuff. By Jazz Singer, he was pretty much crapped out. But Cherry, Cherry and Sweet Caroline are still some of my favorite songs.
I haven’t heard the Carpenters in a long time, but I do remember Superstar. She sang the hell out of that song for sure.
(Afternoon Delight isn’t by the Carpenters btw, it’s Starland Vocal Band. That song and Don’t Go Breaking my Heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee are what I remember most about 1976. Well, and the Olympics.)
What I want to know is where the hell is Seeger? Damn it man, I want some mp3′s!
*** I have been asking that same question for a long time! No Seger on iTunes. I guess he’s rich enough. Dammit. I love all his stuff. ~Laura

  12. Nicole says:

    Do like some Neil Diamond.
The rollerskate song always made me giggle because I thought it was about something dirty. :) Even though my mom told me that rollerskates used to have keys to tighten them I still think it’s about dirty things.
*** I think all songs are about dirty things. That’s why I like music. ~Laura

  13. MorningGlory says:

Ditto me in on the Neil Diamond love fest. Brother Love’s Travelin’ Salvation Show … great tune. And you couldn’t have lived through the 70′s without Carole King’s album, Tapestry. Great music there.
*** Carole King’s Tapestry album is only like one of the best albums EVER. Also Fleetwood Mac’s Rumor album. ~Laura

  14. Joe the Blog Stalker says:

The 70′s had the best music. No question about it. People just like to pretend they’re cool by listening to abstract music by unknown bands when the fact is they sit at home and sing Muskrat Love to themselves.
*** HAHAHAHA! I always thought so too! ~Laura

  15. Heather says:

Girl, you do make me laugh with your ramblings.
*** Laughing is good, but apparently bursting out in song and dance in public is bad. ~Laura

  16. Kim says:

I was always “meh” about the Beatles, too. How weird. I can’t believe you posted about Karen Carpenter. I just posted about puking and I swear I hadn’t read this first.I’ve been too sick. Are you my mother?
*** You must be high on Pepto. Girl, I am no one’s mother but I hope you’re feeling better! ~Laura

  17. BeeBee says:

My favorite ever Neil Diamond song was “Forever in Blue Jeans”.. Jus sayin.
*** I really liked his “Brother Love’s Travelin’ Salvation Show” and “Soolaimon” the best. And of course, “Cherry, Cherry.” ~Laura

  18. Belinda says:

Man, being out in the boondocks for a weekend, I sure have missed this! I need a subscription. Since I love the 70s music, everything mentioned sounds really good but my fav Neil Diamond song was Cracklin Rose. Just too many Beatle songs to pick a fav (better than picking the nose!!)
*** Ha! Yeah, beats picking your nose. ~Laura

  19. Bob says:

Nothing beats pickin yer nose… come-on!
    *** Hmm I gotta disagree. ~Laura

  20. Sam I Am says:

If y’all aren’t just stuck on Steve Jobs, Amazon has Bob Seger – buy one, buy ‘em all on their digital downloads – and they interface and go directly to your iTunes/iPhone/Ipod whatever.
If you were REALLY a 70′s fan you did Barry Manilow (I still do – and Bee Gees)…no head bangin’ going on then, certainly not now…
*** Wow, thanks! Last time I had checked, Seger wasn’t on Amazon either- thanks! Of course I d/led Mandy! Oh I looked- they only have “Her Strut” by Seger- the rest is by tribute bands. Arrghh! ~Laura

  21. Sam I Am says:

I LIED, I LIED….forgot…son downloaded those from CDs for me…arrgghhh…after, of course, I purchased the CDs.
Can I blame my mental breakdown on turkey overload?
*** Maybe this time, Just once. Ha! ~laura

  22. Johnny Utah says:

I’m with you, sucks to the Beatles. I guess I’m a tad younger than a lot of the people on here because I think 90′s music is the best. Nirvana – the bomb. Pearl Jam – the bomb. Alice in Chains – the bomb.
Also, it was an answer to the shitty music of the late 80′s. How often can you say that one type of music destroyed another type (the way grunge killed cock rock)?
*** Oh I love Nirvana and Pearl Jam, ect and have them in my library for sure. But the 70′s was on sale. ~Laura

  23. Curtal Friar says:

Yeah, Neil Diamond was great. “Forever in Blue Jeans” was one of my favorites from him; some others are “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show”, Solitary Man, Cracklin’ Rose,…..
Oh hell, I don’t think there was an old song of his that I didn’t like.
And yeah, Soolaimon’s a great one.
The Beatles did have some great songs, but like with many old rock bands, I think they were idolized way too much. Same with the Rolling Stones.
To tell the truth, I’d much rather listen to either George Thorogood, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or CCR, instead of eithe the Beatles or The Stones.
    *** I LOVE CCR, Fact. ~Laura

  24. SB Smith says:

There was a Beatles song that had an ending that sounded like someone just lifted the needle off the record before it finished. I was at a friend’s house. (I’m guessing we were early Jr. High age.) I don’t remember the year but we were alone in her house that afternoon and the album was playing in the front room. She had not played it before this. Well, that song ended abruptly while we were in a different room and we froze in abject horror…believing that an intruder was IN the house with us. We ventured into the front room..no one there ! Then we played the end of the song again and felt dumb but were also a bit pissed at the Beatles for scaring the shit out of us. Anyone know which song that was and what year the album was released ?
*** Man that would have spooked me too. I don’t know which song it was, but if I hear it, I’ll certainly let you know. ~Laura

  25. Teresa says:

The Beatles were brilliant at writing catchy little tunes that just about anyone could sing along with – rather like longer versions of commercial jingles. Is there any popular song of theirs that any of us couldn’t start singing along with if we heard it pop up anywhere? I don’t listen to much music and even I can remember all the words. That being said, because I grew up at a time when their music was at its most popular, I have gotten to the point where I don’t care if I ever hear it again. Ha.
*** Yeah, you’re right. Just catchy tunes. ~Laura

  26. I haven’t bought any music off of iTunes in a long time. I did buy like 15 eBooks the other day. I’m not really sure why because I haven’t had time to read a single page.
    *** I go through stages where I d/l dozens at a time then won’t for months. ~Laura

  27. Ann says:

You are hilarious and completely right about Neil Diamond and Karen Carpenter and I am just going to pretend I didn’t read anything about the Beatles at all =)
*** They ARE just over worshipped, aren’t they? ~Laura
