Mom's Goat Cart

Here’s a picture I took of a photo of my mother and her goat cart. The photo is in an antique frame and has been on my dresser for years. Today as I was dusting, it occurred to me that goat must be in my blood. I remember my mom telling me that she and her cousins used to have goat cart races and that she would never win because her goat was pretty ornery and her cousins always cheated and she always wanted to stab them. Okay, I added that whole cheating and stabbing part. But you get my point. Goats are awesome even if they’re ornery.

That is just a wonderful picture. what a great way for any chld to pass the time. Makes me wish I could have a “do-over”. I got robbed. I grew up on the streets of Chicago. and so did my Mom. she tells stories of running behind “Tar ” trucks and taking the hot tar off of them and chewing it.. like gum… she’s 81 years old and still has all her teeth. So maybe there is something to That! But a goat cart. how figgin cool is that…

I saw a goat up close once (at a fair of some sort) and, as I recall, it stunk. Then again, so did many people at the fair.

Great picture ! That’s what kids need to do nowdays is invent their own Outside entertainment and get off their butts inside.
    Smelly goats ?
I once knew a couple whose body odors would knock a buzzard off a gut wagon and they each had a master’s degree, so education (or lack of one) had nothing to do with it. I was soo happy when they moved out of state.

All I know from goats is that one time we took the little ones to the petting zoo, and a goat ate roughly one-third of a diaper bag in a matter of seconds. Now that’s ornery.

That looks like fun. I would have loved having a goat cart as a kid as long as I had the fastest goat.
I think I tried this with a wagon and the family dog one hot summer’s day when I was about seven. I don’t think it ended well.

They really took that goat cart racing serious back in the day.
They must have won by the smiles on their faces.

  7. I’d bet your mom at least _suspected_ cheating was going on, and if she’d known stabbing was an option, she’d have gone for it.

What a great photo! I wish I had a goat cart as a kid, hell, I wish I had one now!

    Great photo.
Will you make a little cart for your pygmy goat? I can picture Jack riding in it.

There used to be a little antique store in downtown Chucktown called The Goat Cart, which I remember mostly for its amazing address: 0 (that’s ZERO) St. Michael’s Alley.

That photo is priceless! Never heard of goat races. Sigh. Look what I missed growing up. I, too, grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, but I didn’t chase any tar trucks, I’ll tell you that much!
